Just wanted to say 'thanks' for the spot-on solution to my own identical problem.
Microsoft help is such crap, but it's wonderful to find a blog out there of genuine helpers. Like your correspondent I tried 'system restore' without success, then couldn't see the list in my Outlook delete box, but, low and behold, there it was at the very bottom and is now safely back in place. Many thanks PHILIPPA

Sure, if you drag a list from "deleted items" to "contacts" it will now LOOK like it's a distribution list, but try and send an email.... You'll find that it doesn't send, just sits grayed out in the Outbox. No error message, because other emails are sending normally. You could go crazy and spend many hours trying to figure out the problem, unless you remember "ah, that's the one I undeleted. It must have come back from the Phantom Zone as a Bizarro distribution list." Then you can delete it again, create a new one, and retype or re-select all the members. All this for having hit "delete" to delete a single member!
